Goal

Art history publishing tends to prioritize information density over reading experience. The goal was to design a magazine that treated Matisse's work with the same visual intelligence he brought to his own compositions — where layout, color, and typography weren't just containers for content but active participants in it.

Solution

Research, writing, and design were developed together rather than sequentially, which meant editorial decisions could respond to the material in real time. The magazine's structure follows Matisse's own trajectory — not strictly chronological, but moving through ideas, periods, and obsessions. The result is a publication that reads as interpreted rather than simply documented.
